Custom Socks Cost & MOQ Guide: What Importers Actually Pay

A transparent breakdown of what drives custom sock pricing, how MOQs work, and where first-time buyers lose money — written by the factory, not a trading desk.

TL;DR — the short answer

  • Typical FOB range for custom knitted-logo crew socks: US$0.55–1.30/pair; sublimation US$0.60–1.20; merino hiking US$1.20–2.60.
  • MOQ at SOXMILL: 500 pairs per design & colorway (knitted), 1,000 pairs (sublimation), 3,000 pairs for price-driven basics.
  • Sampling: 7–10 days, fee refunded on bulk. Bulk lead time: 15–25 days.
  • The four things that move price the most: yarn content, machine gauge, terry cushioning, packaging.

What actually drives the price

01

Yarn content

Combed cotton is the value baseline. Mercerized cotton adds luster and cost; GOTS organic cotton, RWS merino and GRS recycled polyester each carry certification premiums of roughly 10–40% on the yarn bill.

02

Machine gauge

Higher gauges (144N–200N) run slower and use finer yarn — expect a premium over 84N–108N athletic constructions. The upside is finer ribs and sharper knitted logo detail.

03

Terry cushioning

Full terry roughly doubles the yarn per pair versus flat knit; half-terry (heel and foot only) is the common middle ground for performance styles.

04

Packaging

A simple polybag + band is near-free. Hook boxes, hangtags, barcodes and retail multipacks typically add US$0.03–0.25/pair depending on print and board quality.

How MOQ works (and why it exists)

MOQ is not a sales tactic — it is set by changeover economics. Each design needs its own knit program, yarn lots and setup; below ~500 pairs the setup cost per pair distorts the price for both sides. That is why:

  • Per-design, not per-order. Mix 4 designs × 500 pairs in one shipment — no problem.
  • Per-colorway for knitted styles. Each colorway re-threads the machine; 2 colors × 500 pairs is a 1,000-pair order.
  • Higher MOQ, sharper price. Volume basics like the everyday crew start at 3,000/color because the market price leaves no room for short runs.

Three ways first-time buyers lose money

  • Skipping the pre-production sample. A US$30–80 sample is the cheapest insurance in the industry — approve the physical sock, not a mock-up.
  • Specifying yarn you don't need. If your market never sees the label, 100% combed cotton often outsells a merino blend at half the cost. Match the spec to the shelf price.
  • Ignoring packing ratios. Tell us your shelf pack (e.g. 5-pair multipack) at quotation stage — retrofitting retail packaging after production is the expensive way round.
